The skilled craftsmen who made the memorials set down the wording and symbolism according to the instructions given to them by the person commissioning the memorial. Some of those monumental masons and the purchasers would have been illiterate. Quite often the person commemorated was not around to provide confirmation of birth dates and the correct spelling of names ! Inevitably errors occurred.
Some memorials present problems. It may have an unusual symbol which needs identifying. The very origins of a memorial may be unknown.
