It was the custom, particularly in Victorian times, to record births, marriages and deaths in a “Family” Bible, sometimes photographs were also pasted in. These bibles were often quite massive affairs, thick embossed leather covers, metal clasps and sumptuous illustrations. They were large and heavy. Often damaged as opening the first few pages without care caused stress to the front cover.
The beauty of some of these bibles has made them, if in good condition, quite collectible. As a result they are occasionally seen in second hand shops and car boot sales - often stored in terrible conditions. Family historians and genealogists are often horrified to see such books, especially when inscribed with family details, outside of the ownership of the recorded family. Cornwall inscriptions Project has ‘rescued’ several of these bibles and they are kept safe in our archives.
