                           Symbolism

A question often asked by those who visit burial grounds is - what is the meaning of the designs carved on old gravestones ? Sometimes the answer is obvious and at other times obscure leading to much scholarly discussion. Numerous lists giving an interpretation of motifs have been published, but these should be regarded with caution, every expert creates their own preferences.

During CIP surveys, note is made of some (not all) symbols and initials that appear on Cornish headstones, as the data base develops it is hoped that a pattern of fashions, regional preferences and meaning develops, based on actual examples.

This photo album will slowly develop into a pictorial glossary.
